John C. Babb, at the age
of 17, mustered in with Company A, 44th
John saw heavy action at Beaver Dam Creek (Mechanicsville), Gains Mill and Malvern Hill before falling ill and dying of fever at General Hospital, Camp Winder, Virginia. John was buried in the Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, on September 20th, 1862. He was the youngest of four Babb brothers, Tom, Jim and Kellett, who took up arms and fought for the Confederacy. Kellett was the only one to return home. The 44th went on to become one of the hardest fought units, suffering some of the heaviest losses of any regiment of the War. We march to honour all Heroes who sacrificed their lives in defense of Family, Home and the Confederate States of America. |
