A recent publication (January 2006) throws new light on the exploits of CSS Shenandoah. Sea Of Gray. Around The World Odyssey of the Confederate Raider, is by Tom Chaffin of Atlanta Georgia, published by Hill and Wang. It is available in hard cover and features 448 pages. Covering the eventful voyage of some 58 thousand miles and how the Sea King returned to London it was from there she sailed under secret orders on October 8th 1864 to begin her masterful campaign around the world.

The story has been told many times but never with such attention to detail especially with inner glimpses of the crew themselves.   Jay Winik, author of The Month That Saved America writes, “In Sea of Gray, Tom Chaffin delivers a rollicking ride of a book, a quixotic trek of Confederate raiders at sea. Civil War buffs take note, it’s more than just readable or good fun, this happens to be a long overdue study as well.”
